Tweed Valley Hospital provides a Level 4 Paediatric Service including inpatient, outpatient, and community services for children from birth to 16 years old.
The Children's Ward
The Children’s ward is a 12-bed unit providing family-centred care. Paediatricians, nursing staff and Allied Health staff work in a multidisciplinary team structure to provide holistic care. The Children’s Ward has a play area and parent’s kitchen equipped with a microwave and fridge.
Visiting hours are 8:00am to 7:00pm for extended family and friends. One parent or carer may stay in the room with their child.
CHIPA - Children's Hospital in the Home, Infusion, Procedures and Acute Reviews
CHIPA provides acute or post-acute treatment and clinical interventions outside the hospital environment. This care is offered in the home or an ambulatory care setting depending on the condition and needs of the child and family.
CHIPA can provide:
- phone and in person reviews post discharge
- blood tests with or without sedation
- acute parental/family/patient education (post ward admission or ED presentation)
- acute wound care
- IV/PICC antibiotics at home
Community Paediatric Nurse
Our paediatric nurse provides:
- care navigation for children with chronic conditions or complex care needs
- wound care
- Nasogastric tube and gastrostomy changes, care and education
- continence assessment and support (constipation, encopresis, Nocturnal Enuresis)
- injections and medication administration; Central Venous Access Device maintenance/flushes
- palliative care
- family education on asthma, eczema (wet dressings), anaphylaxis management, and seizure management.
Child and Adolescent Clinic (Outpatients)
Our Child and Adolescent Clinic provides assessment and care for children and young people who reside in the Tweed–Byron region. Care is provided by a team of paediatricians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists and dieticians.
Children aged up to 16 years are eligible following a referral from a general practitioner or from another medical service within the hospital or emergency department. Services include specialist assessment of medical conditions, development and behavioural conditions, and diabetes.
This clinic is by appointment only.
Due to significant demand for our services, referrals are added to a waitlist and appointments are offered in order of medical urgency. Our clinic reception will contact families directly to schedule an appointment.
