39 medical interns have joined the Northern New South Wales Local Health District, taking up positions in our local public hospitals. These new graduates starting their internships will be entering a training program with networked hospital throughout the LHD, with both formal and on-the-job training.

New radiation therapy cuts prostate cancer treatment times over half

An innovative new prostate cancer treatment is now available at the North Coast Cancer Institute in Lismore, offering significant reductions in treatment times for eligible patients.

The stereotactic radiotherapy treatment delivers a higher dose of radiation to the target area over five treatment sessions, compared to the previous standard course which delivered a smaller dose across 20 sessions.

Local and international clinical trials have shown the shorter course was as effective, while significantly reducing the time commitment for patients.

Quilts bring warmth and cheer to Tuckeroo this Christmas

Patients at Tuckeroo Mental Health Unit at Byron Central Hospital will feel the warmth of community kindness this Christmas, thanks to a donation of 25 handmade quilts lovingly crafted by local volunteers.

The patchwork quilts, stitched by craftspeople from the Mental Health Support Group, are part of the group’s longstanding commitment to supporting people throughout the Northern NSW Local Health District who are living with mental illness. 

Tuckeroo Occupational Therapist Angie D’Elboux said the quilts provided a sense of comfort and homeliness for patients.

Northern NSW ED care rated highly by patients

Patients who attended emergency departments (EDs) in Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) during the 2023-24 financial year have once again given health staff, including clinicians and support staff, positive ratings.    

The latest Bureau of Health Information’s Emergency Department Patient Survey provides a snapshot of the experiences of 2,347 patients who attended NNSWLHD’s EDs from July 2023 to June 2024. During this period, more than 227,000 people attended EDs across the District.

High activity continues at Northern NSW hospitals during late winter

Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) continued to improve planned surgery performance during the July to September 2024 quarter, despite hospitals in the District experiencing some of the highest activity levels on record. 

The latest Bureau of Health Information (BHI) Healthcare Quarterly report (July – September 2024) is the first report to capture a full quarter of data from the new Tweed Valley Hospital, which commenced operations on 14 May 2024.
