EMERGENCY

In an emergency, always call triple zero (000) for an ambulance. Ambulances are the safest way to be assessed, treated and transported to the right hospital for the care you need.

Triple zero (000) is a free call from any phone, mobile or phone box.

For less severe but still urgent situations, go to an Emergency Department.

There are 12 public hospital Emergency Departments in Northern NSW Local Health District and they are all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

We are so proud to celebrate Jason Whitton, who was named a joint winner in the Small Acts of Kindness category at the 2025 NSW Health Awards.

Jason, Acting Operational Services Manager at Casino and District Memorial Hospital (CDMH), was honoured at the ceremony in Sydney on 30 October for the quiet but powerful way he supports patients, visitors and staff every day.

Sandra Vidler, Executive Officer, Director of Nursing at CDMH said Jason truly under estimates the impact he has.

"The uplifting benefit he has on our team, patients and visitors by simply being kind, sharing his big smile and being so very humble is tremendous!

"Every day, Jason does small acts of kindness without even realising he does nor the impact his actions have on those around him. He walks the corridors with a big smile even if he is busy or frustrated with whatever may be going on and says hello to everyone.

"Jason shows kindness every day by using a ‘drop in’ approach to check in with staff, not just his direct team but the broader hospital team.  This is a random and often very discreet interaction, and he always asks how you’re doing.

"Without realising it, this simple interaction has a profound effect on some people who are either having a bad day or have situational crisis going on in their home life, or sometimes just need a little lift by someone who genuinely cares.

"He somehow manages to check in with everyone and still get all his work done!

"All of us here at Casino, are incredibly proud of Jason for winning this Award," Sandra said.

NNSWLHD Chief Executive Tracey Maisey said Jason’s win is a reflection of the genuine care he brings to his role.

“Jason is known for being the first to offer help, no matter the task,” Tracey said.

“He brings a sense of calm and kindness to every interaction, and it’s clear his colleagues value the way he contributes to the hospital and the wider community.”

Jason shared the award with Lachlan O’Neill from NSW Ambulance and was one of 16 winners recognised across the state.

Speaking after the event, Jason said he was stunned to receive the award.

“I was shocked – I didn’t even know I’d been nominated,” he said.

“I’m just an ordinary bloke who comes to work and tries to do the best I can. To be recognised like this is unreal. I’m very proud.”

The trip to Sydney was a first for Jason and his wife Bec, who took the opportunity to explore the city after the awards night.

“It was my first time on a plane and first time in Sydney. It’s very different to Casino – the buildings, the size, everything,” he said.

“I was a bit nervous at first, but we had a great time. I’m really glad we went.”

Jason also reflected on the support he received from his colleagues throughout the nomination process.

“When I first heard about the nomination, I said no,” he admitted.

“I don’t like talking myself up – I just do my job and help where I can. But after a few conversations, especially with Sandra, I agreed.

"The support from everyone at Casino Hospital, my family, the team and management has been overwhelming. I couldn’t be the person I am without them.”

Jason’s humility and dedication are exactly what the Small Acts of Kindness Award aims to recognise – the everyday actions that make a lasting difference.

Also acknowledged at the awards were the Day Stay Joint Replacement team from Grafton Base Hospital, who were named finalists in the Transforming Patient Experience category.
